At Cove, we are so fortunate to have an active Green Team comprised of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who give their time to help students sort their lunch waste each day. These student leaders already led a school assembly to help teach students proper sorting!
This year, Cove will also be working with Zero Waste Marin and Mill Valley Refuse to help reduce waste at our school. Zero Waste Marin will help our school create indoor and outdoor waste stations with signage. They will also provide training on proper sorting as well as education on natural resource conservation and environmental stewardship. As of 2015, Marin County citizens were producing, on average, 4.0 pounds per person per day of materials going into our landfill. With roughly 256,000 residents, Marin County was generating 1,024,000 pounds of waste A DAY. Zero Waste Marin is working with residents, businesses, and schools to decrease this number.
Zero Waste October Challenge: During Zero Waste October, this year’s focus will be on single-use plastics. Monday, October 1- Friday, October 5, Green Team will be collecting all of the single-use containers (chip/snack packaging, plastic baggies/Ziplocs, juice squeeze containers, etc.) that we use at snack and lunchtime. This will help raise awareness about the amount of waste we generate in 1 week at Cove!
Your support is critical. How can you help?
