What is Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) in Math?
The way we teach math has changed! The emphasis used to be on procedural and skill fluency, but now procedural and skill fluency, conceptual understanding, and application are equally valued. With the Common Core Standards there are now two sets of math standards:
Standards for Mathematical Content (What students need to learn by grade level)
Standards for Mathematical Practice (How we teach and how students should engage with mathematics from kindergarten through 12th grade)
In CGI, students are taught to explain their thinking. Children discover (and teachers celebrate!) multiple strategies for solving a problem. Research has shown that children make deeper connections and foster greater conceptual understanding when they engage in few problems and solve them in multiple ways rather than many of the same type of problem.
Additionally, children are offered problems that are at their level. They have the option to use different numbers, based on the level of challenge they need. This allows for deeper and more challenging exploration of the given concept and promotes higher level thinking skills. Read more about CGI and how we are working to implement it here.
Our teachers are working hard to implement CGI strategies this year. Thank you for your support of them!
We had an exciting "Go with the Flow" assembly on Friday all about water!
Be ON TIME for Cove-in-Motion! Teachers have been reminded to send students to office for a tardy slip if they arrive after we begin- “We - are - Cove - School”. Tardies are recorded and tracked and reported at the state level.
Mindfulness, Last Week’s Focus: Emotions Thanks to SPARK Fund-a-Need, students are learning foundational tools to help with focus and self-regulation. If you have a child in 4th or 5th grade, you can ask them how they prevent themselves from ‘falling into the hole,’ (it’s a reference to a poem they read about our habitual nature of repeating a behavior yet expecting a different outcome). Students in grades K-3 are learning to use their breath as a tool to self-regulate and how to attune to sound or sensations in the body if they are feeling overwhelmed.
Help needed! We need you! A 3.5 hour campus support position is open at Cove. You can come help in classrooms and at lunchtime! Or let Principal Michelle Walker know if you can help out 1-hour per day at lunch - we can pay you!
Safety at Pickup & Drop off Please do not park in crosswalks, double park in the drop-off circle, or park in a red zone. This is especially true during pickup time. Please share with caregivers. Let’s keep our kids safe!
