SPARK Fund-A-Need: Personalized Learning Every year, at the culmination of the Live Auction at the Gala, we ask parents to “raise their paddle” to support programs that the Principals are passionate about. We are excited to share with you that this year's Fund-a-Need is focused on personalized learning and conferring at all three Larkspur-Corte Madera District schools. What does this mean exactly and what does it look like in our schools?
Personalized Learning & Conferring: Student success in math and literacy starts with providing comprehensive support for teachers to meet the needs of all learners in their classrooms. Through conferring (which means intentional, thoughtful conferencing individually with children) teachers personalize the learning experience so all children are challenged and supported, regardless of whether they are at, above, or below grade level standards. Artful conferring requires multiple years of study, which is why our partnerships with Momentum (trained by Columbia University) and UCLA are essential in supporting this work.
By aligning with Readers Workshop and CGI Math (priorities in our district’s multi-year professional development plan), this year’s Fund-a-Need will support our goals of narrowing/eliminating achievement gaps and continuing to improve academic outcomes for every student. Our classrooms will be turned into learning labs where teachers are coached by Momentum and UCLA to provide this sophisticated level of personalized instruction. This includes:
Literacy: Teachers will use the newly-purchased classroom libraries for Readers Workshop to teach children in high-interest text at their “just right” levels.
Math- Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI): Teachers will provide “just right” numbers (different levels of difficulty) for word problems, ensuring that all learners can access the curriculum in any classroom. Through conferring, teachers will strategically move students along the continuum of mathematical thinking.
We hope you’ll consider supporting these important programs at the Spring Spotlight event on May 4th with a directed gift.
Sincerely,
Michelle Walker, Principal

Board Meeting Updates:
At the March 6 Meeting - Trustees approved the Second Interim Budget, a Resolution for classified reductions/layoffs, and Dr. Toni Brownas the Hall/Neil Cummins Assistant Principal for 2019-20.
At the April 22 Meeting - Trustees celebrated Golden Bell Recipients and Hall Middle School being awarded the School to Watch designation. Hall is the only middle school in Marin to ever receive this award. The Board discussed the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) draft, professional development, and 2019-20 staffing and enrollment. Trustees voted on the Final Certificated Layoff Resolution (note: due to the separation incentive and other staffing factors, only one teacher will receive a partial final layoff notice. That same teacher will be a full-time employee for 2019-20 in temporary contract status). No certificated staff member will be unemployed due to the reductions.
Teacher Appreciation Week is Coming Up - Monday, May 6th - Friday, May 10th Staff Appreciation Cards: Your words of acknowledgment and thanks are tremendously appreciated by our staff and teachers. You and your children are encouraged to write notes to any other staff members that make an impact on your/their lives. Each classroom will also be working on notes of appreciation so that we shower the amazing staff with cards! Many keep these cards and notes for years to come! There will be a box in the office to drop your notes for non-classroom teachers and staff (list of people here!) no later than Tuesday, May 7. Questions, please email Erin Alvarez.
