Dear Cove Families,
As you know, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a critical part of our curriculum and one of our four Guiding Principles at the Cove School. We are firm believers that a strong social-emotional foundation is necessary for school success, academic achievement, positive social relationships, and the development of emotional competence. Here is an overview of the various SEL programs I have been providing at the Cove School in order to help your child succeed:
Classroom Guidance Lessons: Each class has been receiving classroom guidance lessons on the topics of self-regulation, communication skills, problem-solving skills, conflict-resolution skills, positive choice-making skills, self-esteem and diversity. This year grades 1-5 will receive 8 monthly lessons and Kindergarten classes will receive 16 bi-monthly lessons, totaling to 120 lessons school-wide by June 2019.
Small Group Counseling: Each school year I offer various small groups based on need. This year I offered the following small groups:
New Student Groups - to help new incoming 1st-5th graders settle into and adjust to their new School Family.
Social Skills groups - to teach and help students improve their positive social skills.
Banana Splits Groups- to help students process feelings around separation and divorce. And, in our last session we even make banana splits.
Grief Groups-to help students process feelings of loss and grief when a loved one passes.
Girl Talk Groups-next year in the Fall, I will start these groups for all 5th grade female students to help learn how to build and maintain positive female relationships.
Individual Counseling: I offer weekly, 30-minute sessions for some of our students as need be. Meeting with students individually can help the students navigate feelings and emotional regulation around topics such as anxiety, loneliness, anger and relationships.
Check-in System-this year I tried a new system, where students whose parents signed a Counseling Permission slip form, were able to come and see me as things bubbled up. I will be continuing this program next year.
Conflict Managers: Fifteen 4th and 5th-grade students were trained in how to help other students appropriately, respectfully solve conflicts using assertive words during lunch recess. They are rotated and stationed on the Kindergarten yard to help resolve conflicts under my supervision.
Conflict Resolution/Repair Sessions: this year I have facilitated many a conflict resolution/repair sessions. These sessions give students the opportunity to take accountability for mistakes. Mistakes are opportunities to learn a better way to solve problems. Students practice using assertive language and eye contact to express to others what they did not like and what they would like to see happen differently in the future. It also allows for a reset in the relationship. The sentence structure used is, “I don’t like it when you _________, please _________.
Assemblies: I coordinated quarterly assemblies to reinforce the topics discussed during classroom guidance lessons as well as review our School Family Commitment and Stress Busters. Ever wonder why we use the Stress Busters & School Family Commitment? Click here to find out their importance.munity, our goal is to welcome and involve as many families as possible. Thus, building a bridge between our English Learners (EL), their families and the Cove School Staff. We hosted a successful International Potluck Picnic at San Clemente Place Park in November 2018. Also, I have been attending all the DELAC meetings, which support our EL community.
Success and challenges will unquestionably happen at school, but my role as the School Counselor is to help your children learn how self-regulate, build resiliency, and ultimately appropriately solve problems as they arise. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Scarlett Headley, M. Ed, The Cove School Counselor
