Conference Week This Week! How is my child doing? On Friday, we had our first Coffee Chat with the Principal (link to presentation slides here) and discussed different ways to stay informed about your child’s progress.
One very important way you can learn about how your child is doing is through a parent-teacher (or parent-teacher-student) conference. You can expect to see work samples from your child as well as get notes after the conference (they might be sent home that day or the next week). Teachers really value this time to work with you as a team for your child’s success.
Here are some ways to make the most of your conference this week:
Prepare questions you might ask. Write them down!
What are my child’s strengths? Learning styles?
How are my child’s work habits?
Does my child participate in class activities and discussions?
How will I know how my child is doing throughout the year? When will I get an update on how she is doing academically? socially?
Do you have specific concerns about my child?
Does my child get along well with other students?
What are my child’s goals/ next steps? What can I do at home to help? (recommend books, educational games, etc.)
Arrive early. Conferences run on a very tight schedule. If you arrive late, teachers will not be able to extend your conference past the scheduled end time.
Take a team approach. “We both want what’s best. How can we get there?” This avoids putting anyone on the defensive and keeps the conversation productive.
Continue communicating. Ask how your teacher prefers to communicate.
Tell your child about the conference. Start with the positive things her teacher had to say, but also share concerns. Explain how you can all work together for success.
