Our Cove team believes in creating kind, resilient, collaborative and inclusive students. Our SEL Guiding Principle is all about this! We believe that the best approach to helping students navigate the challenges of friendship and growing up is to equip them with tools that they can use when they hit the bumps in the road.
The 12 Tools in the Toolbox program are designed to build resilience, self-mastery & empathy for others. Our Responsive Classroom-style morning meetings build safe, supportive classroom communities. In addition to the consistent focus from our classroom teachers, our counselor also teaches social-emotional learning using her Conscious Discipline background.
We also believe the best way to deal with bullying is a prevention approach through empathy-building and fostering self-awareness and reflection skills. At Thurday’s assembly, 3rd-5th graders watched the chain effect of kindness (check out this video) and discussed how we want our school to look and feel.
We also learned the difference between single unkind acts and bullying. We defined bullying as unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated over time. Students learned about the various roles in a bullying situation, and how to identify and respond when we observe bullying happening. We watched this video (with a clear preface that it is for older students only, and that it is hard to watch) and discussed the roles various people play in it.
Cove is pledging to Stick Together against bullying. Students took this pledge and then signed their names on duct tape and stuck it to a school-wide banner. It was quite powerful to witness! K-2nd graders will have a similar, age-appropriate assembly on kindness versus bullying this week.
