PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
How to Raise a Reader Pamela Paul and Maria Russo are books editors at The New York Times and co-authors of How to Raise a Reader. They emphasize the important role teachers have in teaching kids how to read and how parents can help develop those reading skills by cultivating a love of reading at home.“It does start with the parent,” Paul said. “So even if you haven’t been reading a lot, it is important to bring books into your life because kids look to their parents as role models.” For parents who aren’t already big readers, she suggests that parenthood could be a chance to make good on those resolutions to read more. The goal is to develop an intrinsic love of reading, so make reading special. In her house, Paul’s kids have a set bedtime. But they are allowed to stay up 30 minutes longer if they are reading in bed. This type of strategy makes reading special, a treat that comes with privileges. That’s very different from rewarding a child for reading with candy or screen time -- extrinsic rewards that send the message that reading must not be very fun. And for older kids, Russo has advice based on her own experience with her daughter, who was an avid reader and then abruptly stopped when she hit her teenage years. Tips And Tricks Parents Can Use To Nurture a Love of Reading in Kids
Congratulations to Ms. Maher’s Class! They read the most minutes last week! With a total of 6,429 minutes read, your class wins a popsicle party!
Has Your Child Secured Donations for Our School? Our goal of $70,000 remains unchanged from last year, but we need your to help get us there! The Cove PTO can’t do it alone! Ways to support your child:
Post and share your child’s 99Pledges page with family and friends via your social media—think Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
Help your child ask family, friends, neighbors, or coworkers to donate by sending a link to their custom 99Pledges page.
Encourage your child to read, read, and read some more!
Encourage your child to write thank you notes to family and friends who sponsored them.
Honesty! While it’s tempting for students to inflate the number of minutes read, we hope parents can use this as a valuable opportunity to teach the importance of honest, hard work.
Next Week! Dress as your Favorite Storybook Character for the Readathon Assembly! Calling all Harry’s and Herminones, Cats in the Hats, and Jane Austen fans, get ready to rock their outfits for our Readathon Assembly on Thursday, January 30th!
