Parenting in the Digital Age Parenting in the digital age is challenging. It is infinitely more challenging with our current reality of distance learning that requires our students to be on technology a lot and also requires them to be independent. While we will not always be able to “out think” our children or prevent them from making mistakes, we can help them know what to do when they make a mistake or see something negative happening. We can teach them how to notice when something seems wrong and how to respond. We can keep open lines of communication and have expectations around transparency of technology usage.
Here are some tips for parents:
Have your child keep their phone in a shared part of the house - not in their own bedroom.
Set a cut-off time for phone/tablet/computer use each evening.
Let them know that you will be looking at their texts/chats/emails from time to time to ensure they are appropriate.
Develop a plan for how they can respond when a group text they are in turns negative or hurtful.
In some cases, your child might need clear boundaries to help them focus and function. Here are some ideas in that case:
Block Google Chat (however, this also blocks the Google Hangout/ Meet function, so any class lessons that are using that will be disabled). This is an instructional document on how to Disable/Hide Chat controls in Gmail. If you want to do this, please work with your teacher to ensure no disruption to access to class meetings.
Block certain websites such as YouTube. There is a chrome extension that you can add that allows you to select websites and put a password in that allows managed access with parent permission.
All of this combined will not prevent everything from happening, but it will let our children know we are partners in navigating today’s challenges facing teens and pre-teens. Please see the additional resources I have linked below. Together, we can help our children create healthy relationships and a positive digital footprint!
Sincerely,
Michelle Walker, Principal
New Times and Links for Art: Hello Cove Artists! We have adjusted the time of the Friday Live Zoom Art Sessions to leave a little extra room for transitioning after the assembly.
