What will teaching and learning look like when we return to school?
When we come back to school, it will look different than what we are used to. There will be some important rules and procedures in place for safety. Within those rules we will be working hard to keep learning fun and engaging for your kids!
What can you expect?
Daily Health Screen: Parents will complete this health screening every day before their child comes to school. Teachers will confirm (by looking at the results page) that you have completed it before allowing your child to enter the classroom.
Entering Campus: Students will enter through a specific assigned entrances (based on their class) and proceed to a specific place to meet their teacher. There are blue markings on the ground designating where to stand while waiting to meet their teacher.
No Adults other than Staff: No parents are allowed on campus. Kindergarten and first graders will meet their teachers outside the entrance gate so parents can be with them. Grades 2-5 will meet their teachers inside the entrances so they will need to say goodbye to parents at the entrance.
Masks: Masks covering nose and mouth are required for all students.
Backpacks/ Learning Supplies: Your teacher will tell you exactly what your child should bring to school to keep at school and what should be kept at home. We cannot share supplies, so your child’s supplies from their learning kit will be exclusively used by them.
Bring charged LCMSD ipad or Chromebook: Remember the charger cord too! If your child didn’t borrow a device from the district, they will have one designated for their use at school.
Water Bottle: Bring a filled water bottle in the backpack (sealed tightly so it doesn’t leak on technology!) for designated water breaks.
Specific Seats: In the classroom, students will have an assigned seat/space and will largely be expected to remain in that space.
Outdoor Learning: Many teachers will utilize outdoor spaces, so be sure to send a layer with your child! Also consider hats for outdoor use (to help with sun).
Handwashing Breaks: Teachers will schedule handwashing breaks using the sinks in their rooms and other handwashing stations nearby.
Movement Breaks: Teachers will provide movement breaks within the day, but these will be social distanced movement breaks. We won’t have recess scheduled as we want to maximize instruction during the 170 minutes we have with them each day.
Traffic Flow: There will be specific directional flow to get around on campus...it will be like at stores!
Bathrooms: Students will use the bathroom as needed. Maximum capacity will be 2 students at a time and they will be cleaned on a regular, frequent schedule. Students will wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom.
Teachers will start talking about these things this week and they will use the time with students the week of October 5 to teach routines and procedures. While it will be unfamiliar at first, we will all get the hang of it! Helping everyone feel comfortable with the new routines is our goal. We want to talk about them lots so we “demystify” them!
Coming Soon...We are working on some resources that will come out this week:
Series of Short Videos (1-4 minutes each)- These will demonstrate various scenarios for our return to school. These will be helpful to show your children so they know what to expect.
1-Page Reference for Families- This will be a helpful, quick reference on the daily routines. You can print it out as a checklist or keep handy on your phone.
Fall Conferences: There will be no official conference week this fall. An early release week is not feasible given the AM/PM in-person learning schedule we will be following. Thus teachers will not be conferencing with every family as they usually do this fall. We look forward to getting back to conferencing as soon as we are able to return to some semblance of normalcy! Teachers will be sending progress reports sometime before December break. For more information about how to monitor how your child is doing, see this doc: How is my child doing?
Return Your Library Books! We are still missing hundreds of books from last year. Individual email reminders will be sent out next week. Returns books to the Library Box in the loop on Fridays, 8am-4pm
Free lunch to all students! Please be sure to come to the Cove to pick up lunch, Monday 12:15pm-1:00pm Please see the LCMSD Covid-19 Plan website for Lunch Information. Please Note: Lunch pickup time will change when in-person learning begins October 5th. New hours will be 11:am-12:45pm to accommodate am/pm schedules. Questions, please contact Nichole Urrea
