Reading and Writing Workshop
the whys and hows behind the workshop approach
by Kristie Martinez, District EL/Literacy Specialist
In LCMSD, we teach reading and writing through a workshop model. Workshop is a highly structured and predictable framework that allows students to build independence, take initiative, and become strategic thinkers through authentic reading and writing experiences. Because this is an approach and not a program, it is flexible and able to accommodate the ever-changing demands of students in any classroom, at any grade level. We have adopted Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study to support the workshop. These standards-based units are backed by years of research in best practices when teaching young readers and writers. They provide teachers with guidance in providing direct, explicit instruction that often guides the mini lesson and instructional share components of their daily workshop practice. Here is a detailed description of the components of the workshop approach: Workshop 101.
