Tips And Tricks Parents Can Use To Nurture a Love of Reading in Kids
Pamela Paul and Maria Russo are books editors at The New York Times and co-authors of How to Raise a Reader. They emphasize the important role teachers have in teaching kids how to read and how parents can help develop those reading skills by cultivating a love of reading at home.“It does start with the parent,” Paul said. “So even if you haven’t been reading a lot, it is important to bring books into your life because kids look to their parents as role models.”
The goal is to develop an intrinsic love of reading, so make reading special. One idea is to have a set bedtime but allow them to stay up 30 minutes longer if they are reading in bed. This type of strategy makes reading a treat that comes with privileges. That’s very different from rewarding a child for reading with candy or screen time -- extrinsic rewards that send the message that reading must not be very fun. Let’s foster a love of reading in our children at home and school!
Cove will be participating in the 8th Annual Global School Play Day (#GSPD2022) on Wednesday, February 2. Students will engage in play with toys that do NOT require batteries or electricity. No devices. Teachers/ Adults don't organize anything for students, don't tell students how to play with the toys/games, and don't interfere with students unless they see something unsafe (we will maintain all pandemic safety protocols). We encourage classes and families to generate ideas together. Doing this will help keep to one of the core values of #GSPD2022 - student-directed, unstructured play!
More and more research underscores the critical importance of play in the emotional, social, intellectual and physical development of children - including this study from 2018 from the American Association of Pediatrics. Last year over a half-million kids participated in 72 countries; This year the projection is one million. This is often a favorite day for kids- a day when they get to play at school!
Our Cove Readathon 2022 has been busy! Bedtime stories, pep rallies, and guest speakers!

Readathon Updates On Friday we were treated to a visit from Author Jaimal Yogis and Illustrator Vivan Truong. They discussed their writing process, about their books, and how their illustrations come to life. Students were able to join in illustrating and asked great questions!
Many students asked how to purchase Jaimal Yogis’ books.
