Conference Week
November 14-18, 1:15 Dismissal Every Day
One very important way you can learn about how your child is doing is through a parent-teacher (or parent-teacher-student) conference. You can expect to see work samples from your child and to hear about their progress academic and socially. Teachers really value this conference time to work with you as a team for your child’s success.
Here are some ways to make the most of your conference this week:
Prepare questions you might ask. Write them down!
What are my child’s strengths? Learning styles?
How are my child’s work habits?
Does my child participate in class activities and discussions?
How will I know how my child is doing throughout the year? When will I get an update on how she is doing academically? socially?
Do you have specific concerns about my child?
Does my child get along well with other students?
What are my child’s goals/ next steps? What can I do at home to help? (recommend books, educational games, etc.)
Arrive early. Conferences run on a very tight schedule. If you arrive late, teachers will not be able to extend your conference past the scheduled end time.
Take a team approach. “We both want what’s best. How can we get there?” This avoids putting anyone on the defensive and keeps the conversation productive.
Continue communicating. Ask how your teacher prefers to communicate.
Tell your child about the conference. If your child is not part of the conference, share what you learned with your child. Start with the positive things her teacher had to say, but also share concerns. Explain how you can all work together for success.
