Global School Play Day 2023 was a HUGE success!
It was fabulous to see students engaged in board games, outside activities,
and fort building! The best part? Activities were 100% student driven!
The 5th graders led the school in a song to kick off the 100th day of school on Wednesday as well!
Black Joy Celebration at Cove
Books can either serve as a mirror, a window, or a door into the perspective of a particular group. When we look at diverse and/or historically marginalized groups of people, we typically focus on their oppression and subjugation. Discrimination, segregation, and marginalization are hard. Despite the hardships faced, past and present, by marginalized groups, there is beauty too if only we re-condition ourselves to see it. We are choosing to not only see it, but celebrate it.
This month, we will focus on Black joy. We would like to share a lovingly curated book list that offers insight to the Black experience. This collection features books about skin color, self-expression, self-acceptance, excellence, and everyday living while Black. You can check these books out at school or your local library!
We hope that you will join us in broadening your perspective as you explore and celebrate Black culture with your child at home. Books are a vehicle for change. We hope that you will see a reflection of yourself and/or gain greater understanding of those around you through engaging with these stories.
Sincerely,
Michelle Walker, Principal and
The LCMSD Book Project Team
Board Updates
On February 1 we held our annual Board Budget Study Session. This is an important stage in our 2023-24 budget development cycle where our current fiscal outlook was presented, leadership made recommendations for the upcoming school year, Trustees engaged in a discussion, and time was allocated for public comments. Here is the agenda.

THANK YOU to those who have donated to the Readathon thus far! And a BIG THANK YOU to those who have reached their fundraising goal of $175.
The last day to donate is TUESDAY, Feb 7 at 11:59PM PST. Last year it was nailbiter and donations were flying in at the 11th hour. Who doesn't like a little friendly competition? It's for the kids!
Can we get 100% donation participation? All classes that receive 100% fundraising donations will receive a popsicle party! The class will also earn two Books Passage gift cards -- one toward class materials and one for their teacher!

Ruby Bridges Walk + Assembly February 17 Mark your calendar to walk to school and show support for ending racism and bullying. Meet at the corner of Spindrift and Seawolf at 7:45am to walk to school as a community. There will be purple beanies, purple bracelets and purple buttons for your backpack. Feel free to wear more purple! We will leave at 7:50am to walk along Spindrift and enter school by the baseball diamond. If you miss the walking train, we will have a table in front 81 Spindrift (three houses down from the entrance to school) with all the accessories so you can do a partial walk to school to show your support.

Students are welcome to bring Valentine’s cards (must include the whole class if you choose to give cards) with pencils, colorful erasers, stickers, tattoos, etc…but NO candy or food items please!
