Cove will be participating in the 7th Annual Global School Play Day (#GSPD2021) on Wednesday, February 3. Students will engage in play with toys that do NOT require batteries or electricity. No devices. Teachers/ Adults don't organize anything for students, don't tell students how to play with the toys/games, and don't interfere with students unless they see something unsafe (we will maintain all pandemic safety protocols). We know that our distance learners will need to use Zoom to interact and play together. We encourage classes and families to generate ideas together. Doing this will help keep to one of the core values of #GSPD2021 - student-directed, unstructured play!
More and more research underscores the critical importance of play in the emotional, social, intellectual and physical development of children - including this study from 2018 from the American Association of Pediatrics. Last year over a half-million kids participated in 72 countries; This year the projection is one million. This is often a favorite day for kids- a day when they get to play at school!
Tips And Tricks Parents Can Use To Nurture a Love of Reading in Kids
Pamela Paul and Maria Russo are books editors at The New York Times and co-authors of How to Raise a Reader. They emphasize the important role teachers have in teaching kids how to read and how parents can help develop those reading skills by cultivating a love of reading at home.“It does start with the parent,” Paul said. “So even if you haven’t been reading a lot, it is important to bring books into your life because kids look to their parents as role models.”
The goal is to develop an intrinsic love of reading, so make reading special. One idea is to have a set bedtime but allow them to stay up 30 minutes longer if they are reading in bed. This type of strategy makes reading a treat that comes with privileges. That’s very different from rewarding a child for reading with candy or screen time -- extrinsic rewards that send the message that reading must not be very fun. Let’s foster a love of reading in our children at home and school!
At Friday's Readathon Assembly we had a special guest, David Swope, Author and Illustrator of The Spider King. Seven of our students entered and won his Spider King Art Contest. Winners will be notified and sent a signed copy of the book!

LCMSD Budget Meeting – 2/3/21 at 4:30pm Annually the LCMSD Board of Education holds a Budget Study Session. This meeting is aimed to discuss the Governor’s budget proposal for the 2021-22 school year, alignment of goals with resources, and possible reductions. California school funding does not provide the necessary resources to support the instructional program delivered in LCMSD, which is why the parcel tax, SPARK, and PTO/A are vital sources of revenue. Even with this community funding, LCMSD is forecasting cuts. The LCMSD Fiscal Advisory Committee, along with leadership, have identified possibilities for reductions in the upcoming school year. The Board will discuss these ideas and the forecasted budget. As with all Board Meetings, community input is valued and there will be opportunities for public comment. The meeting is scheduled for February 3, 2021 at 4:30 PM via this Zoom Link.
